Packing Self Storage Tips:

Self-Storage Tip #2: Secure valuable items by placing them in the rear of the storage unit, at the bottom of your stacks of boxes. This way, it's more difficult for thieves to locate your valuables.

How much storage unit space do you need?

It's best to leave just a little extra room in your storage unit for moving things around. Try and create aisles from front to rear too, just in case you need to access items stored in the very back of the storage unit. The following should help you understand how much space you need to store your items:

Self Storage Unit - Room size primer:

Total sq ft
Approximate Size of Unit
5 X 10 50 sq ft Small Closet, Walk in Size

Is storage unit price really everything? No!

Sure, some San Francisco storage facilities will throw everything and the kitchen sink at you to win your business! "1st Month FREE", "50% 1st 3 Months", "$1 Move-In" are common discounts. But storage should be shopped like a commodity, based on price only. There are several other factors that you should think about when determining what makes your San Francicso storage unit most suitable to your needs.

1) Security. This is a biggie. Strong (and tall) facility perimeter fencing is a must. Well-lit ground, surveillance cameras and alarm system are major pluses. And onsite management is definitely a good thing.

2) Call or visit the storage facility to meet the managers/employees. Customer service is important. If anything happens and you need professionalism from the facility, it's comforting to know that you can count on integrity and real concern from the facility staff.

3) Cleanliness. By visiting the facility, you can see how well the facility is maintained on a day-to-day basis. Manicured lawn, swept and clutter-free driveways and aisles are signs that the facility ownership genuinely cares about their business, as well as your best interests. A clean facility also deters rodents, insects and pests - and well, that's obviously important!
